The film was extensively shot in Iceland and then in Slovenia (Postojna Cave, Piran, Bled); this was first Telugu language movie to be shot in Slovenia.

The movie was an overwhelming success, becoming one of the highest grossers in the history of the Telugu film industry. It also completed hundred days in at least three centres. Also, the Hindi Satellite rights were sold for INR 35 million (US$ 540,000) which is the highest ever for a Telugu film.

A politician, Gandi Babji protested against the film because the character of Rahul Dev is called "Gaandipetta Babji" which is is somewhat similar to his name. Babji felt his name would be portrayed in bad light and he threatened to take action against film.

Before the release, Dasari Narayana Rao came down heavily on this film by calling it as a blantant copy of 'Baasha'. Dasari even tried to buy the distribution rights of the film but Ramcharan vehemently rejected instead he bought Viswaroopam to damage 'Naayak's collections.

There was a controversy surrounding the title of the movie when Girijan Student associations raised an objection, stating that the term 'Naayak' is reserved for use exclusively by people belonging to the Lambadi sect and demanded a change in the movie's title. The objection raised by the Girijan Students was submitted before the Censor Board and the Board decided not to change the title as it felt that the title does not relate to any caste feelings.

Legendary music director, Ilaiyaraaja's melody "Subhalekha Rasukunna" from Chiranjeevi's 'Kondaveeti Donga' was remixed in this film

Initially, it was claimed that Shruti Haasan would do an item song in the film, but were later denied by the actress herself. Eventually, actress Charmee ended up doing the item song in the film.

This movie is the first time Ram Charan Teja has been seen performing a dual role.

It was dubbed into Tamil and Malayalam under the same title.

This blockbuster hit marks the second time Ram Charan and Kajal are paired together after in 'Magadheera'.
