This evocative tale is a love story in which a young maiden, Mayil (Sridevi), has fantasies about marrying a fashionable urban youth. When a sophisticated and city-bred veterinarian comes into their village, she is totally enamoured by him and dreams of marrying him. However, his intentions are not pure and he betrays her. The brokenhearted Mayil faces further woes when her mother also passes away, forcing her to marry her distant cousin, Sappani (Kamalahasan) a simpleton who is treated extremely poorly by society. How will Mayil come to terms with her shattered dreams and stark reality? Things get worse for her when she is pursued by the local bully Parattayan (Rajnikant). What fate awaits Mayil and what will Sappani role be in her life?
