This socially relevant drama delves into the struggles of the unemployed youth of India, through the trials and travails in the life of Rakesh, a graduate looking for work in the capital.
He shares a small home with two other unemployed youth played by Amit (Karan Razdan) and Tilak (Arjun Chakraborty). Rakesh falls in love with a struggling actress Kusum (Anita Raj), whose life is likewise wretched having to take care of an old and ailing grandmother and a paralysed father (Nilu Phule). Will the young people be able to rise out of their impoverished existence and establish some financial security in their lives?
The film is a remake of the Tamil movie Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980), which was also directed by K. Balachander also starred Kamal Haasan.
Kamal Haasan regretted doing the film in Hindi.
