In 2011, Sam is an affable but aimless young man with an interest in conspiracy theories and finding hidden messages in everyday popular culture, while living a lazy, jobless life in Los Angeles. One day he meets and develops a crush on his beautiful new neighbour Sarah, whom he finds frolicking in his apartment's swimming pool. When Sarah mysteriously vanishes without a trace, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal, and conspiracy in the City of Angels.
