This radical social drama realistically traces the trials and travails in the life of sincere men from impoverished backgrounds, who find themselves unable to get employment due to the stranglehold of powerful trade unions in Kerala. Raju is a straightforward young man struggling with poverty. He is in desperate need of work, but finds himself unable to get employment anywhere, because he does not belong to any trade union. However, when he tries to join a trade union, he's faced with payment of a heavy bribe.
Incensed and infuriated, Raju loses his temper, only to find out that he is not alone. He joins hands with Peter and an entire community of unemployed men, who used to be fishermen, but have been left stranded due to environmental changes, caused by unsupervised stone quarrying in the area. They reach out to Janarthanan, a well-educated man, who agrees to help them set up their own trade union.
With great difficulty, they gather the funds to start their own union. Will the newly registered trade union succeed in finding employment for its members? Will Janarthanan always remain a true well-wisher of the community? How will the friendship between Raju and Peter be affected by circumstance, especially with Raju falling in love with Peter's sister Mary? What does the future have in store for Raju, Peter, Janarthanan and their community?
This is the only Malayalam film to be written and directed by Mani Ratnam.
