"Unakena vennum sollu"..remember those soothing strains from a memorable song this year in Ajith's Yennai Arinthaal..These lyrical words become the title for director Srinath Ramalingam's latest venture. A spooky thriller with subtle plots on live in relationship, the abandoning of new borns and moving on are intertwined with the central plot of a vengeance seeking spirit of an 8 year old who wants to reunite with her biological parents and know the reason for her abandonment. There is also an interesting sub plot built on Women with mental health issues being denied motherhood especially and more so in failed marriages.
The lead pair Jaqlene Prakash and Deepak Paramesh are quite effective. Gunalan Morgan, Mime Gopi and Mourhrna Anetha lend solid support. The film makes use of the typical spooky elements like creaking doors, the mandatory baby doll, abandoned rooms and stairways and looming shadows of spirits in the dark. The director reserves his best for the climax and preclimax sequences involving exorcism, hypnotherapy, drama, emotional bonding and enough thrills at the same time. The music and the BGM in particular are good and so is the haunting cinematography.
Another fairly good spooky thriller after Strawberry and Maya.Recommended for its neat screenplay and engaging plot line/turn of events.
