Trivia:
This film is adapted from the novel A Mule for the Marquesa by Frank O'Rourke.

At age 52, Burt Lancaster still insisted on doing all his own stunts.

While shooting the scene where Maria attempts to escape through a canyon wired with dynamite, Claudia Cardinale's stunt double was badly injured during the explosion. Cardinale, who had never ridden a horse before, performed the stunt herself for the final cut, and escaped uninjured.

This is the first western to feature nudity although it is a long-range view and tame by later standards.
