Following World War II, Transcarpathia was incorporated into the Soviet Union. The anti-religious Soviet regime aimed to suppress the Greek Catholic Church in the region. Bishop Tódor Romzsa of Munkács refused to renounce his Greek Catholic faith or betray his oath to the Pope. As a result, he was tragically murdered in 1947, with Stalin's approval. His sacrifice exemplifies the belief that "to die for Christ is like living forever." In 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Bishop Romzsa in recognition of his unwavering faith and martyrdom.
