Evocative and provocative, this family-oriented relationship drama revolves around Ganga Raju, a loner who works as a mechanic in a car shed. He lives with his son as a single parent and tells his son that his mother is dead. However, the truth is that Ganga Raju is separated from his wife, Lalita Rani, who is a famous and wealthy film actress.
In flashback, it is revealed that Ganga Raju met Lalita, when she sought refuge in his house one night from thugs who were attempting to rape her. Ganga Raju comes to her assistance and saves her. Lalita later reveals that she is the sole heiress of a vast estate. The owner's will stated that all the money would go to Lalita upon marriage, or be donated to charitable causes, prompting many greedy suitors to try to force her into marriage.
Ganga Raju offers to marry Lalita in order to protect her and also ensure that she is able to avail of her inheritance. However, Lalita decides to let go of the inheritance so that it may be used for the welfare of the needy, and marries Ganga Raju purely out of love.
Ganga Raju encourages Lalita to resume training in dance, so that she can make performances. The two share a close bond of love, and have a son together. However, as Lalita gains fame and fortune, Ganga Raju starts to become insecure, as he is just a car mechanic.
Slowly, his inferiority complex leads him to misbehave, and he demands that Lalita stop performing immediately. She tries to reason with him, stating that she has already given her word and booked some performances, but Ganga Raju decides to cut off all ties and separates from her. He also keeps the child with him and does not allow Lalita any access to the boy.
Finally, the boy finds a way to meet Lalita in secret and unable to bear the distance, she files a case for custody of her son in the court of law. What will be the outcome of the case? Will the couple find a way to resolve their differences and stay together, at least for the child, especially when they both hide deep love and trust for each other?
