This is a comedic entertainer, which also has a positive social message. The story follows Marthandan, a wealthy young man who lives with his parents in a palace. Having led a sheltered and insulated life in a rural setting all along, he decides to try his luck and sets out to Chennai to find a girl.
There he meets "Idea Mani" (Goundamani), who is very cunning and tries to make money from the innocent Marthandan in comical ways. Marthandan finally meets a girl (Kushboo) in a bakery and befriends her. The rest of the story is about how he tries to win her over and how he understands the value of money.
This movie was a remake of the Hollywood movie "Coming to America" (1988), starring Eddie Murphy.
A megastar of Tamil cinema, Kamal Haasan made a guest appearance in this movie.
