Katie, a 17-year-old is forced to stay at home since childhood as she has a rare disease, which is a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. Having only her father Jack for company, her world opens up after dark when she steps outside to play her guitar. One night, her dreams come true when she is noticed and asked out by her longtime crush Charlie, whom she has secretly watched from her bedroom window for years. As they start on nightly summer excursions, her risk to sunlight grows and she is presented with the gut-wrenching dilemma of whether she can live a normal life with her love.
