This intricately woven romance revolves around a girl Kapalkundala, who is brought up in a remote forest by a Kapalika (Tantrik sage) in total isolation without having met anyone other than her his foster-father. When Kapalika lures a young man into the forest with the intention of sacrificing him to the goddess, Kapalkundala instantly falls in love with him. She rescues Nabakumar, who happens to be a young city-dweller from Saptagram, marries him and moves to the city with him. The rest of the tale revolves around the struggles Kapalkundala has to face in the process of her adjustment to city life, and her eventual realisation that it would be impossible for her to become acclimated and assimilated into the culture and lifestyle of the city.
