The story of Kalimannu was born from a concept of a baby in the womb talking to its mother using footage shot live for many months through Swetha Menon’s pregnancy. Inspired by the Puranic story of Abhimanyu and his mother Subhadra, the director portrays the journey of exploration in the relationship between a mother and a child before and after it is born.

For the delivery scene, the crew stayed back in the hospital for nearly a week and footage for over twenty minutes was shot from the delivery room. With prior permission and three cameras placed in the delivery room; Swetha's husband, Blessy and two cinematographers were present to capture the moment.
