Character Error
At a certain point David Levinson uses a satellite phone, but before, in the story, all satellites were down.Dr. Okun supposedly wakes up after having been in a coma for 20 years since the last film. He is shown jumping out of bed and running around as though nothing happened. A person in a coma for twenty years would barely be able to speak, assuming they were capable of any movement at all.

Continuity
At the end of the movie when an alien fighters rear door opens Patricia starts firing her pistol, she fires two shots and the slide locks back, then in the next shot of her the slide is forward again without her reloading.

Factual Mistake
When alien ship is using "plasma drill" to get to the Earth core there are several mistakes/errors shown: 1. Using such a drill in the ocean would vaporize huge amounts of water, causing fog to raise and obscure the view in very large area, not to mention storms that would follow. 2. Earth inner core begins 3100-3900 miles below surface, depending on location. The treasure hunters' boat is shown having a sonar equipment for underwater search. Such equipment is totally incapable of showing drilling progress with thousands miles depths involved. 3. How can one calculate exact moment of reaching core when depth of the core in every specific spot on earth is unknown? It is only known it is in 3100-3900 miles range, yet time to reach when drilling is calculated to the seconds, while it should have at least 25% error margin.

Errors in Geography
The London Eye is not as close to Tower Bridge along an incorrectly straight River Thames in the scene when the alien ship is dropping debris all over the city. In fact, there are several more bridges between the Eye and Tower Bridge around bends in the river.
Trivia:
Jessie T. Usher will play Will Smith's characters' step son in this sequel, while Liam Hemsworth will play Bill Pullman's character's son-in-law

David Arnold, composer of the score to the first film, said on his Twitter account he was not asked to score to the sequel and that since the studio owns his themes for the first film, the new composers could use them

The announcement of the recasting of Bill Pullman's daughter, played by Mae Whitman in Independence Day(1996), to Maika Monroe was met with much outrage. Fans expressed dismay over the decision across the social media. Most notably, Anna Kendrick, a close friend of Whitman, spoke out against the recasting on Twitter. The speculation being that producers believed Mae Whitman was not "conventionally pretty" enough to reprise her role. Whitman, who has had a very solid acting career including her lead role in 2015's surprise comedy hit DUFF, has remained mostly silent on the matter

Soon after the success of the first film, 20th Century Fox paid Dean Devlin a large sum of money to write a script for a sequel. However, after completing the script, Devlin didn't turn in the script and instead gave the money back to the studio, as he felt the story didn't live up to the first film. It was only approximately 15 years later, that Devlin met up with Roland Emmerich to try again, having felt that they had "cracked" a story for a sequel.

The movie has been given a $200,000,000 budget, $125,000,000 more than its predecessor, Independence Day (1996), which had a $75,000,000 budget and had a box office result of $817,400,000, making it the highest grossing movie of 1996.

As of Wednesday 4th March 2015, director Roland Emmerich has confirmed that Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role of David Levinson.

Will Smith was supposed to reprise the role of Captain Steven Hiller, but Fox refused to meet his request for a $50 million salary for two sequels. Roland Emmerich confirmed Smith would not be returning for the sequel in June 2013 to Daily News, but mentioned that Jeff Goldblum would return to reprise his role as David Levinson. Additionally, Maika Monroe replaced Mae Whitman as Patricia Whitmore. Whitman did not officially comment on the change, aside from a re-tweet of a HitFix article on her Twitter account titled "The case of the missing Mae Whitman and 'Independence Day 2'", implying she was never approached. Ross Bagley, who played Dylan Hiller in the original film, had never been approached to reprise his role, either.

Jessie Usher will play Will Smith's characters' step son in this sequel, while Liam Hemsworth will play Bill Pullman's character's son-in-law.

The project was officially green lit by 20th Century Fox on 27th November 2014

This is Roland Emmerich's first sequel.

Parts of the film were filmed at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah. The Bonneville Salt Flats had been used as a filming locale in various different films, which include Con Air (1997), John Carter (2012), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007), The Tree of Life (2011), The World's Fastest Indian (2005), and the original Independence Day (1996).

Second collaboration between director Roland Emmerich and actress Sela Ward, the first being The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Is shot in anamorphic Panavision unlike the original movie which was shot in Super-35.

With the passing of James Rebhorn and Robert Loggia, who respectively played Albert Nimziki and General William Grey in the original movie, their characters won't be reprised in the sequel.

Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson), Bill Pullman (Thomas J. Whitmore), Judd Hirsch (Julius Levinson), Vivica A. Fox (Jasmine Dubrow-Hiller) and Brent Spiner (Dr. Brackish Okun) are the only actors to reprise their roles from Independence Day (1996).

Liam Hemsworth's brother, Chris Hemsworth, appeared in Star Trek (2009) as the father of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine). Pine's actual father, Robert Pine, appeared in the original Independence Day (1996). Brent Spiner appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987).

Susan Sarandon turned down a prominent role because she found the script incomprehensible.

Liam Hemsworth turned down the role of Jerôme in Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013) and Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013), which would have had him play the love interest of Charlotte Gainsbourg. They would eventually go on to appear together here.

While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller's valor in the War of '96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.

Soon after the original film, a sequel was in development. There was discussion regarding whether a sequel could be possible at all because the hive mind alien race portrayed in the original film seemed to be rendered extinct. One option included editing parts of the original in order to allow for liberties taken in the proposed sequel. A leak of the 1996 script for a sequel included adapted alien technology that allowed Dylan Hiller to lead a group facing the aliens head on in space, and President Whitmore still suffering from his mind link with the alien. Rumors cite Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich refused to participate in a sequel after a falling out with FOX Studios after FOX TV cancelled The Visitor, a project in which the two were involved.
