The movie is a remake of the Bengali film Basu Paribar (1952).

Producer Sashadhar Mukherjee wanted Saira Banu for the lead female role, but her mother Naseem Banu rejected it because she thought Sunil Dutt looked to old for her daughter.

The film marked Ram Mukherjee's directional debut as well as Sanjeev Kumar's screen debut.

The Heavy lighting used for the indoor shots was so strong that Asha Parekh's arm got burnt. Technicians had to rush in a first-aid kit to treat her.
