The film is a free adaptation of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy Hamlet.
Several plot changes were included in order to cater to Indian film goers, with Ophelia telling her part in flashback and singing songs with friends, while the gravediggers were used for comic effect.
The film was inspired by the Parsi theatre days, with Kishore Sahu's monologue inculcating couplets from famous Indian poets and using parts of dialogues from Ahsan's Khoon-Nahak (1928).
