Spiced with upbeat humour, this romantic drama delves into the life of Sam Alexander (Mohanlal), a fun loving automobile workshop cum garage owner is more keen in scripting and directing plays than running his business. While working on Shakuntahlam, the famous play by Kalidas the main actress (Kalpana) who was supposed to play the role of Shakunthala, elopes with Krishnan Kutty (Nandu), a fellow artist, forcing Sam to frantically search for a new face to enact Shakunthala. Accidentally, one day, he meets Sridevi Menon (Kanchan), with whom he fell in love with. He attempts all methods to woo her and finally she falls in. Sam casts her as Sahkunthala in his drama and she unwillingly agrees for it without the knowledge of her parents. In the process of working together, they find themselves falling in love, causing seemingly insurmountable obstacles in their relationship. With their lives threatened, will they still succeed in staying together against all odds?

The producer of this movie, Suresh Balaji is Mohanlal's brother-in-law. He had earlier produced Ulladakkam (1991). Later he again produced Nirnayam (1995).
