When a young man, Gautham, begins having strange imaginations and hallucinations, he is diagnosed with a rare condition called Integration Disorder. However, his unique state of mind seems to reveal unknown facts and hidden criminal activities. When his intuition is followed up on, it leads to a horrifying discovery that a company is distributing seeds of rice that have been contaminated with hydrogen cyanide. Gautham must now embark on a journey to rid the world of this poisonous product, and protect the world by stopping it from reaching the public. Will he succeed in overcoming the many dangers and obstacles that crop up? Can he ensure that future generations are treated to nutritious and healthy rice?

This visually stunning psychological thriller was released worldwide in Dolby Atmos Sound. It went on to be positively received everywhere, especially in the United States, where it had one of the best openings ever for an Indian film.

The film's title was officially announced as 1 on May 31, 2013 to coincide with actor Krishna's birthday, while the posters were released by the 14 Reels Entertainment, on Mahesh Babu's birthday.

It was initially announced that the film would release in the Sankranti weekend of 2013. However, due to delays with Mahesh Babu's 'Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu,' the release date was postponed to January 10, 2014.

Gautham Krishna, the son of Hero Mahesh, is plays the younger Mahesh character in the film, marking his debut as a child artiste.

A special set worth INR1.5 Crores was built at Annapurna Studios for this movie.

The song sequences and some other parts of the movie has been filmed in exotic locations like Hungary, Germany, Goa and Bangkok.

Reports of Sukumar directing a movie with Mahesh Babu were afloat since 2009, but the project was delayed due to latter's other commitment. Finally, on November 12, 2011 Sukumar attended the 50 days public function of 'Dookudu' along with Mahesh, officially announced the project and revealed that the project would start in early 2012.

The audio for the movie was released on December 15, 2013.
