Dr. Sandeep Kumar (Jeetendra), Inspector Ranjith (Rajinikanth) and Advocate Prakash (Rishi Kapoor) are the thickest of childhood friends. The three of grew up together because Prakash is an orphan, and Ranjith’s father Daga (Amrish Puri) is a smuggler and is unaware of his son's identity.
The three were brought up like brothers by Sandeep's parents (Pran and Shavukar Janaki) in their loving and ideal household. As grown-ups, Ranjith is an honest police officer, Sandeep is a well known doctor in the city, Prakash is a leading criminal lawyer. Their paths constantly clash against the criminal activities of Ranjith's father, Daga who has grown into a mob kingpin and doesn’t know that Ranjith is his son.
One day Daga’s lackey (Guru Bachan) kidnaps and rapes Ranjith’s wife, Lata (Poonam Dhillon) who is pregnant. Sandeep witnesses this heinous act but promises Lata not to reveal her secret to anyone. Daga takes advantage of their silence; he kills his underling and traps Sandeep for the murder.
Ranjith is forced to arrest Sandeep and Prakash takes up the case but Sandeep doesn’t reveal the truth to protect Lata. So, Prakash concocts a story that Sandeep had committed the crime in order to save his wife, and brings in Rekha (Bhanu Priya) a woman Sandeep had previously saved, to act as his wife.
Meanwhile, Sandeep really falls in love with and marries Rekha; and Prakash finds love with a thief Shanthi (Kimi Katkar), who also seeks to avenge her brother's death at the hands of Daga. At the end Ranjith comes know the truth, he accepts Lata even though she got raped and he recognizes Daga is his father and Rekha is his sister whom Daga left in streets in the childhood. Finally Sandeep, Ranjith and Prakash team up to destroy Daga's criminal empire and bring him to justice.
