Set in Stip, a small town in Macedonia, every January the local priest throws a wooden cross into the river and hundreds of men dive after it. Hundreds of men participate and whoever retrieves it is guaranteed with good fortune and prosperity. Petrunya decides to take the plunge and dives into the water on a whim and manages to grab the cross before the others. This victory makes her competitors furious and questions her gender's participation in a traditionally men-only religious ceremony. All hell breaks loose and Petrunya holds her ground as she isn't willing to give it up.
