Embedded with melodious music and charged emotions, this offbeat romantic drama follows the events in the life of two people, Bansi and Birju struggling to survive in a cruel world.
The unfortunate Bansi has been forced into becoming a courtesan in Mithal Bai's kotha. One day she dances at the wealthy, Seth Mehtab Singh's house. After her dance he tries to rape Bansi. But Bansi escapes and gets into a bus.
In the bus, she meets Birju, and finding a kindred spirit in him Bansi shares her life's sorrowful story with him.
She was a happy-go-lucky girl named Meera in Khushiram, raised by a person Jeevanlal, but was forced by circumstances to resign herself to a life as a courtesan.
Birju is touched by Bansi's story and decides to protect her, and somehow or the other save her from the clutches of those trying to force her into a life of a sex-trade worker. Both Bansi-Birju run from door to door for shelter.
Finally they marry in their own village but will the rigidities of society allow them to have a peaceful married life? Will they be able to escape Bansi's painful past and begin a new life together?
This movie stars Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri, who later went on to get married in real life.
