America Ammaayi (1976)

Witty and wise, this offbeat family drama traces the twists and turns in the life of Sridhar, an intelligent young man from a traditional, conservative Indian family, who travels to America and settles down there.

Over a period of time, he falls in love with Deborah, a kind and gentle American woman. However, his parents are shocked by his decision to marry her and refuse to accept her into their house.

Deborah is not one to accept defeat easily. With patience and perseverance, she works hard towards learning everything about the Indian tradition, language, culture and way of life. She even learns about Indian classical dance and music, and impresses her in-laws to the extent that they are forced to accept her as their daughter-in-law.
