Isabel, a co-founder of an orphanage from Kolkata travels to New York to meet Theresa, a potential benefactor. Despite her frustration in the need to justify a charitable donation, she agrees to meet Theresa right before her daughter's marriage. Isabel unexpectedly meets a man from her past who happens to be Theresa's husband. Secrets are revealed in this journey and a circumstance forces Isabel to revisit the decision she made 20 years ago.

Julianne Moore and Billy Crudup, who play husband and wife in this movie, also acted together in Trust the Man (2005), in which they play friends (not love interests). Both After the Wedding (2019) and Trust the Man (2005) were directed by Bart Freundlich, who is married to Julianne Moore.

This is a remake of the original 2006 film starring Mads Mikkelson (Hannibal, the Hunt, and Dr. Strange) and Sidse Babett Knudsen (Westworld and Borgen). The original was directed by Susanne Bier (Bird Box and The Night Manager). It was originally set in Copenhagen while the remake is set in New York. In addition the remake has swapped the genders of the three leading characters.
